Assessing the Starburst Contribution to the Γ-ray & Neutrino Backgrounds
نویسنده
چکیده
If cosmic ray protons interact with gas at roughly the mean density of the interstellar medium in starburst galaxies, then pion decay in starbursts is likely to contribute significantly to the diffuse extra-galactic background in both γ-rays and high energy neutrinos. We describe the assumptions that lead to this conclusion and clarify the difference between our estimates and those of Stecker (2006). Detection of a single starburst by GLAST would confirm the significant contribution of starburst galaxies to the extra-galactic neutrino and γ-ray backgrounds. Upper Limits to Fluxes of Neutrinos and Gamma-Rays from Starburst Galaxies
Loeb and Waxman have argued that high energy neutrinos from the decay of pions produced in interactions of cosmic rays with interstellar gas in starburst galaxies would be produced with a large enough flux to be observable. Here we obtain an upper limit to the diffuse neutrino flux from starburst galaxies which is a factor of ∼5 lower than the flux which they predict. Compared with predicted fl...

Loeb and Waxman have argued that high energy neutrinos from the decay of pions produced in interactions of cosmic rays with interstellar gas in starburst galaxies would be produced with a large enough flux to be observable. Their model is reexamined here and we obtain an upper limit to the diffuse neutrino flux from starburst galaxies. The upper limit obtained here is a factor of ∼5 lower than ...

Our knowledge of the high-energy universe will change dramatically over the next several years as new astronomical detectors of high-energy radiation reach their design sensitivities. Besides Swift and HESS, which are already making important discoveries, these include the ground-based imaging air-Cherenkov telescopes VERITAS and MAGIC, the γ-ray space telescopes GLAST and AGILE, and the partic...
متن کاملThe Starburst Contribution to the Extra-galactic Γ-ray Background
Cosmic ray protons interacting with gas at the mean density of the interstellar medium in starburst galaxies lose energy rapidly via inelastic collisions with ambient nuclei. The resulting pions produce secondary electrons and positrons, high-energy neutrinos, and γ-ray photons. We estimate the cumulative γ-ray emission from starburst galaxies and find a specific intensity at GeV energies of νI...
